GAME COMMISSION ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF ARMSTRONG COUNTY CASE

    BOLIVAR, Westmoreland County - Pennsylvania Game Commission Southwest Regional Director Matt Hough today announced that final resolution was brought to one of the largest wildlife crime sprees in Armstrong County history, which occurred during the December 2004 deer season.
    
    "This case has been successfully concluded with 74 separate charges resulting in assessed penalties of $32,350," Hough stated.
    
    Armstrong County Wildlife Conservation Officer (WCO) Barry Seth, along with Deputy WCOs Dave Shaul and Gerald Vensel, were the primary investigators in a case that took several months to pull together. Armstrong County District Attorney Scott J. Andreassi prosecuted the case on behalf of the Game Commission.
    
    The seven defendants in this case had faced potential fines of more than $72,000. All face a loss of hunting privileges in addition to the fines and costs.
    
    Southwest Region Law Enforcement Supervisor John Smith commended the officers for their diligence.
    
    "This investigation was the result of some good old fashion leg work and was conducted very professionally by WCO Seth and Deputy WCOs Shaul and Vensel," Smith said. "We also acknowledge the invaluable assistance of the Armstrong County Sheriff's Office, Pennsylvania State Police and the Armstrong County District Attorney in the successful prosecution of these individuals."
    
    The seven defendants and their total citations and assessed penalties are:
    
    David W. Rosenberger Sr., Ford City, Armstrong County, 28 citations, pled guilty for total of $11,650 in fines. Rosenberger originally was charged with 29 game law violations carrying total maximum penalties of $22,000. Charges included: unlawfully obtaining a hunting license, unlawful use of lights while hunting deer, taking antlered and antlerless deer out of season, illegally possessing deer, illegally possessing deer carcasses and venison, and conspiracy to commit various game law violations.
    
    Shawn R. Heilman, Ford City, Armstrong County, 15 citations, pled guilty for total of $6,425 in fines. Heilman originally was charged with 15 game law violations carrying maximum total penalties of $12,025. Charges included: failure to properly report game kills, illegally taking and possessing wildlife, unlawful use of lights while hunting deer and conspiracy to illegally take and possess wildlife.
    
    Samuel V. Cravener, Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, 8 citations, pled guilty for total $4,200 in fines. Craverner originally was charged with 14 game law violations carrying total maximum penalties of $14,700. Charges included: unlawful use of lights while hunting deer and illegally taking and possessing wildlife.
    
    Matthew S. Bureau, Ford City, Armstrong County, 11 citations, pled guilty for total of $5,325 in fines. Bureau originally was charged with five game law violations carrying total penalties of up to $11,100 in fines. Charges included: conspiracy to illegally take and possess wildlife and conspiracy to unlawfully use lights while hunting deer.
    
    An un-named juvenile, Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, 8 citations pled guilty for total of $2,950 in fines. The 14-year-old juvenile originally was charged with a total of eight violations carrying maximum penalties of $8,300. Charges include: conspiracy to take and possess wildlife and conspiracy to unlawfully use lights while hunting deer.
    
    Dennis A. Rosenberger, Ford City, Armstrong County, 3 citations, found guilty for total $1,350 in fines. Rosenberger originally was charged with 3 game law violations carrying maximum total penalties of $3,200. Charges included: conspiracy to illegally take and possess deer.
    
    Dewey G. Buzzard III, Butler, Butler County, 1 citation, pled guilty for total of $450 in fines. Buzzard originally was charged with one game law violation carrying maximum penalties of $700.
